3 differents treks

It’s a Homestay (a house that is mostly used for tourists and volunteers). There is  gazebo (a nice place to sit, relax, read, and/or eat), situated in a large clearing at the intersection of two small rivers.

The accommodation in the forest is very rustic with only basic facilities, fitted bed sheet, and pillow. Some rooms have small shelves or closets, and mattresses raised on wooden bed frames. There are also plenty of places to set up a hammock, if you have one.

In keeping with Indonesian customs, please remember to always remove any footwear before stepping onto any porches or into any rooms. There are toilets and showers.

When the forest is going through a strong flowering season (timing is very unpredictable, but usually sometime in April and/or May, lasting approximately 2-5 weeks), there are many bees in camp. They are attracted to camp by the abundance of salt (in the kitchens, on people’s clothes, etc). The bees are especially abundant in open areas, so you are welcome to carry chairs and tables into your room or down to the riverbed where the bees are usually less bothersome. Unfortunately, although the bees can be a major annoyance around camp, there is nothing that can be done about them. In fact, it’s actually a good thing – the abundance of bees during flowering seasons is a strong indicator that the forest is ecologically healthy and productive.

Accommodation in the Forest

The following is, of course, not an all-inclusive list of things to bring with you, but is just a short list of important items that most tourists are glad they knew to bring (or wish they had known to bring) for themselves.

  • Day pack / small backpack for carrying things
  • Good hiking boots and/or tall rubber boots
  • Headlamp or flashlight, and spare batteries
  • Extra (and already-charged) batteries (for flashlights, camera, etc)
  • Mosquito net and bug repellant
  • Towel and toiletries
  • Bed sheet or a light sleeping bag (or sleeping bag liner)
  • Re-usable water bottle (at least 1L size) / There is unlimited drinking water – river water that has either been boiled for 15 minutes or filtered through a special water filter
  • Snacks (granola bars, cookies, etc) to eat while hiking or between meals while relaxing at camp
  • Any medication you might need, especially allergy medication (DO NOT count on being able to buy any medication, especially the brands that you prefer, anywhere in Kalimantan; remember that there are plenty of stinging insects in the forest (including bees and wasps), so people with bee allergies will need to be extra prepared.)
  • Hammock if you wish to sleep outside
  • You can bring your swimwear to go to the river or the waterfall next to the homestay
Don’t forget to bring!
